Today they asked Otto:

Pick one to see what Otto says.

Today they asked Otto:

Otto saysCuriosity

They're tiny umbrellas. They stop sweat and rain running down into your eyes, which is very handy. They also help your face show how you feel, which is why people can tell you're surprised before you say anything.

Otto saysLittle ones

It doesn't go anywhere, you do. The Earth spins like a very slow merry-go-round, so your part of it turns away from the sun for a while. When it turns back around, that's morning.

Otto saysCompany

That's rotten, and I'm sorry. Do you want to tell me what happened, or would you rather I told you something interesting to take your mind off it? Either one is fine with me.

Otto saysSilly

Your feet have more sweat glands packed into them than almost anywhere else on you. The sweat itself doesn't smell at all, but tiny bacteria living in your socks think it's dinner, and the smell is what they leave behind.

Otto saysHomework

Of course. Here's a trick first: to multiply anything by 8, just double it three times. So 8 times 7 means 7, then 14, then 28, then 56. Shall I test you, or go through them in order?

Otto says61 languages

Arigatou. If you want to be extra polite it's arigatou gozaimasu. Try it on someone today and watch their face. I can do this in sixty other languages, so pick a harder one next.

Otto saysImagination

Once there was a dragon named Ember who sneezed marshmallows instead of flames. The other dragons laughed at her, right up until the winter the village ran out of food. Shall I keep going?

Otto saysOpinions

Careful, this one starts arguments. If a sandwich just means filling held in bread, then yes it is. If a sandwich needs two separate slices, then no it isn't. I think it's a sandwich wearing a very tight coat.

Otto saysWhen it says no

I'm not going to answer that one, sorry. That's a question for a grown-up in your house, not for me. Ask me something else though and I'm all yours.

Otto saysCuriosity

They do, but not like you do. Most fish go still and stop paying much attention for a while, and since they have no eyelids they do all that with their eyes wide open. Some reef fish even make a slimy sleeping bag to nap inside.

Otto saysBig ideas

There isn't one. Whatever number you say, I can always add one to it, and so can you, forever. People invented names for enormous ones anyway, like a googol, which is a 1 with a hundred zeros after it.

Parent controls

You see every single conversation.

Not a summary, not a sample. Every question your child asked and every answer Otto gave, in the app on your phone.

The parent app, showing a real conversation

Read the full safety page

  • Every conversation, in full Open the app and read exactly what was said, both sides of it.
  • Answers are filtered for children Otto is set up to refuse adult topics and give age-appropriate answers. No filter is perfect, which is why you can read everything.
  • There is no screen Nothing to scroll, no feed, no videos, no way to wander off into something else.
  • Made for 4 and up It has small parts and a sealed battery, so it is not suitable for children under four.

Out of the box

Two minutes, then it's theirs.

Step one

Plug it in, pick your wifi

One cable, one network, one password. That is the whole setup, and you only ever do it once.

Step two

They press the button and talk

No screen, no menus, nothing to swipe. They hold it, ask it something, and Otto answers out loud.

Step three

You read every word in the app

Every question and every answer, on your phone. Not a summary and not a sample. All of it.

Straight up

What Otto is, and what it isn't.

We would rather you skip this than be disappointed by it.

It does

  • Answer questions out loud, in 61 languages
  • Remember what your child told it, and pick the thread up later
  • Show you every conversation in the app
  • Run about a day on a charge, then top up over USB
  • Work as a push-to-talk button, or hands free

It doesn't

  • Play music or sing. It talks, that is all
  • Work without wifi. No internet, no answers
  • Have a screen, a camera or a browser
  • Suit children under 4
  • Replace a tablet, and it isn't trying to

Questions parents actually ask

How long does delivery take?

Ten to eighteen days. Otto ships direct from our supplier, which is how we keep it at $149 rather than the $250 an equivalent costs. We know that is a long wait and we would rather tell you now than at the checkout.

You get tracking as soon as it leaves.

Do you ship outside Australia?

Yes, anywhere. Delivery is free on every order over $100, and Otto is $149, so that includes yours. Australia takes 10 to 18 days; everywhere else is usually two to four weeks.

Your country may charge import duty when it arrives, which is set by your government and is not included in what you pay us. If your country is not listed on our shipping page, email us before you order.

What age is it for?

Four and up. It has small parts and a sealed battery, so it is not suitable for children under four.

Can my child hear something they shouldn't?

Otto is set up to refuse adult topics and to answer in an age-appropriate way. No filter is perfect, and we are not going to tell you it is.

What we can tell you is that you see every conversation in full, in the app, so if something does get through you will know about it. If that ever happens, email us and we will help.

Does it play music?

No. Otto talks and answers questions. It does not sing, play songs or read audiobooks. If music is what you are after, this is not the right thing to buy.

Does it need wifi?

Yes, always. Otto's answers come from the internet, so with no connection it cannot answer anything. It is not much use in the car or on a plane.

What happens to what my child says?

What your child says is sent over the internet to be turned into an answer, and that processing happens overseas. We are not going to claim it stays in Australia, because we cannot verify that.

Our privacy page sets out exactly what we know and what we do not. Please read it before you buy.

What if it breaks?

Email us and tell us what it is doing, with a photo or a short video if you can. If it arrived faulty, or it stops working through no fault of yours, you are covered by the consumer guarantees in the Australian Consumer Law. Those do not run out when the 30 days do.

We would rather sort it out than argue about it.

Can I return it if we don't get on with it?

Yes. Thirty days from delivery, change of mind included, as long as it comes back to us complete and undamaged. You cover the return postage on a change of mind. If it is faulty, we cover everything.

It never says "not right now".

One button, no screen, and more patience than any of us have on a Tuesday afternoon.
